Title:
Nuclear waste management: improving public acceptance
When:
08.11.2010
Where:
European Economic and Social Committee - Brussels
Category:
FORATOM

Description

Everyone has a view on radioactive waste. The issue raises legitimate concerns and mobilises public opinion. Consider the following facts from the European Commission’s 2008 Eurobarometer Survey on Radioactive Waste:

  • 44% stated that they were in favour of nuclear energy (45% were against), with 61% saying they would be in favour if they were satisfied an effective waste management solution existed
  • 72% of respondents said they that believe there is no safe way of managing the waste from Europe’s nuclear power plants

Well, safe and effective solutions for managing radioactive waste do exist and are being implemented, in countries like Sweden and Finland. But not enough citizens know this. Nuclear waste management: improving public acceptance will seek to address the knowledge gap. The Workshop will address three key questions:

  • What are the main obstacles to greater public acceptance of waste management solutions?
  • Who must do what?
  • What progress could be made at EU level?

Don’t waste this opportunity to put decision-makers under the spotlight, learn more about the facts and express your views on an issue of fundamental concern to all citizens.
